That is not much to go on. Style needs to reflect you and your family. What do you like. How many people and age groups. Etc. What does the existing room look like

Where is the main used outdoor area, what are the existing colours of floor and kitchen. What furniture do you require??? Etc etc do you need window treatments, what are the stairs made of? Is it a solid wall on stairs or a balustrade?

To me the plants look as though they may be a mixture of New Zealand flax and native Dianellas. They do look ratty. The garden bed, especially at the lower end is too narrow - this is one reason you are having trouble with it. It is hard to get water to stay there - it will probably all run off. What about a hedge coming down the line of the bed? Many hedges don't need to be regularly clipped, especially many of the conical shaped lily pillies. But the bottom area isn't wide enough for these so you would need to use a different plant in the lower section. Like a Japanese Box for instance which would need clipping. They are both green and tough. There are instances where there are hedges used of different heights, and this could be one of those instances. Your last picture shows a garden that is well cared for and looks good. I have day lilies in my garden that I regard as weeds - I cant get rid of them they are so tenacious. I wouldn't recommend planting them. Whatever you choose, you need to integrate this choice with the style that you have in your bottom photo, so that there is continuity. Then it will come together. Ok, so I gather its south facing so the wall gets the northern sun. It looks like the wall is low so the neighbours can look in (& visa versa). Possibly some trelace that goes above the fence planted with a vine (there are number). This would give the two windows an outlook. Many herbs would also grow well so possibly a vertical garden with a watering system. Paving or another hard surface would be better as grass would be hard to grow. Its a great space, you could even use some French doors from the dining room with potted palms for that tropical feel (also helps with the cross flow ventilation in summer) add some bench seating maybe a fire pit for winter. Its hard without seeing the property in total but hope you can draw some inspiration from all the comments & have fun :)

Can your architect model the light coming in with different angles of the sun throughout the year? Also want to avoid heat build up and light damaging furniture and art. We had light coming in from high windows onto the dining table and it was really annoying and had to put shutters on.

The set up photos is how I would set up the space. You just need to work out your style and add in personal artwork. If this is your furniture you have a wonderful basis to add to.

Would you consider changing the kitchen. The island is wasting space and could be rotated 90 degrees to give more space to living area. Or close up end if you want couch facing window. Bench right along the wall with high windows.

Looking at your photos, they may be real estate photos. But I still like the placement and type and colour of furniture. And yes the kitchen island is wasting space, as Kate has shown. A buffet or storage wall is the only use for that thoroughfare. Agree with Kate wonderful idea about extending the island and adding seating. At the moment the island is your only bench space and that needs to be increased.
