White Paint & Flooring Help

Here are some photos of our split level 70s home. It has lots of natural light, original timber in every room, tiles in kitchen and wet areas & cream carpet in lounge & bedrooms.

Question 1. What kind of ‘white’ paint would look best? Considering we will change the carpet to floorboards.
Question 2. Should we paint the ceilings the same colour as the walls? (To give a higher ceiling/more modern look)
Question 3. We are wanting to replace carpet with floorboards. What colour, light or dark wood? Herringbone?
Any other tips or thoughts to freshen the place? We considered painting architraves and skirts but it would be a lot of work so likely will retain the current wood.

Can you test/show your samples against the stairs? That would be what you need to work with as well as the windows. It’s hard to tell from photos but I’d go with the right hand side. You need a warm tone that is lighter but not too much lighter than the windows. I agree with Snowy Mountains - either 1/2 or 1/4 and I’d do the whole lot in that colour. I’m just painting a house now and not only is it easier to paint the ceiling/walls/cornices the same, it gives a cohesive updated look.

Polyurethane timber floor finishes are the most durable and economical floor coating available for floor sanding and polishing projects. Especially if you are considering the resale of your home in the future. Liming or white washing your floor certainly is in fashion at the moment but is far more expensive to do. Hi Lisa, after years of searching for a white colour that is not too blue, not too pink, not too yellow and not too green, I found one!! It's Dulux Snowy Mountains. Two years ago we have recently painted two units we built and recently our son's room got painted with that colour and I still love it! It's of course personal choice, but I'm so happy with that particular white.

I’d suggest using pieces of plaster, painted in your chosen colours, to see what the colours look like in different rooms and at different times of the day. We were always going for Natural White which ended up having a pink tinge in certain light in our home. Our large back area is east facing (8m of glass stacking doors) with two south facing windows and two large skylights for northern light. Our colour consultant suggested Dulux Snowy Mountains Qtr strength and it is great for our home. Not stark (no blue/grey tinge) but definitely not too warm. We went all the same colour - walls, trims, ceilings - just in different finishes. Modern home with squareset ceilings. White is so hard. Good luck with your choice!

Judging colours from photos is fraught with danger as they appear different on different devices. And choosing whites is not easy. However I’ve just gone through white selections in my renovation and have warm greys in the house. I narrowed down to Casper White Quarter or Lexicon Quarter. Both will work with warm grey. Sounds like Casper for you as you already like it!

A lighter floor board. Your budget will dictate whether it is laid in a herringbone pattern. DO NOT paint the timber trim. It is a feature. Once painted there is no turning back. You can paint the ceiling and walls the same colour, but I would paint ceiling white on ceiling and cornices, and Dulux snowy mountain on walls.

Looking at your photos, the long beautiful expanse of timber windows lets the sun light onto floor. So you need to be aware of what type of flooring you put in that area due to UV damage. Check the rating on the timber to make sure it will not fade.

Timber door and window trims are great. I wouldn't paint them however much/little work it was. Dark timber floors show the dust a lot more - another reason to avoid them. Our house has walls and ceiling the same colour and I like the look. (No cornices in our house.) My husband does the painting and it's SO much easier if it's all the same colour.

In the photo, the lighter timbers all look a bit greyish compared to the stairs/trim. Do you have a sample of blackbutt or brushbox? (Blackbutt is light, not dark!)

We can get this French oak Engineered Wood at an awesome price (similar price to what we’ve been quoted for laminate).

Should we do it? Or should we get a lighter colour in laminate or hybrid?

We really love wood but the budget isn’t really there.

It’s an awesome price for a reason. Given how much you’re going to use it in your home make sure you love it for something other than price.

True. The wood is leftover from a bigger project, usually 80 per square metre, now 30.

I love dark floors just not sure if we can get away with it here or if it would work. Sounds like we’d regret them being so dark …?

Also mindful of matching floors too well to the timber and then later down the track, we may change the timber colour in some capacity. Decisions decisions.

Snowy mountain works really well though, tried it on the walls today! Thanks everyone 😁

Thought I would share this photo for what it is worth . It is just cheap vinyl from Bunnings as temp flooring over asbestos tiles in bathroom. We didn’t have a colour choice. Just posting so you can get a bigger picture of a different floor timber to the trim

Personally, I don't think the sample goes with the existing timber trim.

If you like the dark sample and it fits your budget then have it. I wouldn’t have it, it jars and the colour is dated but it’s not my house. And once there’s furniture and people (most important part of the home) your floors won’t matter.

Yep, agree. The only way it could work is if we painted all trimmings white! I think we’ll ditch the dark idea. Thanks everyone :)

I’m just spending a fortune replacing my dark timber floors because, like you, I get a lot of sun in the room. The bleaching of the floor over 15 years has been immense and when we looked at resanding, the amount needed to be taken off was more than the allowable amount of the timber veneer. It was also going to happen again. We’ve gone for a much lighter colour instead.
