Should I paint this bit of fence?
Comments (18)I had a similar situation. Part of my fence is slat & & part is cap & lap. To cat proof it we put silver grey polycarb on the top half & i painted the slat to watch at the front. I was going to paint the cap & lap but as my builder pointed out, it will silver with age & the plants will grow up to hide a lot of it plus once you paint it has to be repainted every 8 to 10 years not to mention the expense. It is bugging me to look at this half pine wood half polycarb fence until it silvers but he makes a good point. I guess it comes down to money & what you can live with....See MoreHow do I beautify an ugly fence?
Comments (51)I have one of those Monika and I would venture to say that you wouldn't be able to cut it flat because with everything around everywhere having the waved top it would look really odd I think, and I doubt whether you would be able to paint it at least until the development is well over or you could find the developers all over you, along with residents who like yourselves have signed to agree to the covenants. A lot of people enter into these developments because there is a better chance of people looking after their properties however I will say that I am the only owner occupied in my part of the street, and I am forever weeding everyone else's garden, picking up the rubbish blown from the sea breeze on new builders not looking after their rubbish and the renters chucking empty beer bottles where they have sat on the steps drinking and throw the bottles into the garden and I actually water the rental alongside me as our gardens join, as yours probably does, and they refuse to water it. I want my place to look nice and if left to these renters it would look like homeless shelters. I think the tall pots and something like the black bamboo could look really good :)...See MoreHow do I make this ugly house look better?
Comments (15)First - fix the proportions. remove the square hedge and possibly second hedge in front of the window. The fence on the right should be moved back in line with edge of house as it is making things look out of proportion. Colours - You need more contrast - keep the bricks, paint the garage darker, maybe charcoal. The arch - The arch around the entry is a bit off putting - I think it is because it is blocking view of the door. Could it be removed? If not, might first idea is to add some malibu wood paneling near the door or make a little wooden entry deck in the malibu. Second idea is to grow some vines or greenery on it. and remove the three little scrubs. Or instead of vines add two big potted plants on each side of the arch to make it more welcoming. Hope that helps Best of luck...See Morewhat colour should our fence be
Comments (14)If you do light fence and dark posts , what colour will you do the wooden section ? I think that if you did the wood in charcoal , which is the logical colour , it is going to look funny with the posts also dark -- it will look like you have done the whole fence dark , think it is too dark , so have painted the lower panels lighter to try and lighten it . And when you say about changing 'the doors' to match , I hope you mean the garage doors ? I was nearly going to suggest in my earlier reply , but I had made enough suggestions that didn't relate to the fence -- but I love the warmth but also lighter honey tones of the entrance door , and was going to suggest changing the garage doors to a similar warm honey wood . Doing the entrance door darker would be a mistake IMO -- it will darken the spot you want to be light and welcoming ! My 'it wont be cheap' suggestion ( aka money doesn't matter too much ) would be the fence the same as the house , the fence caps and house trim in charcoal ( both being horizontal lines ) , the entrance door as it is BUT change the garage to match , and the fence timber too ! That way , you get the roughness of the house and fence , but toned down and warmed up with the honey toned wooden highlights . Again , you don't have to agree , just an idea ....See MoreKate
