Small kitchen layout help and ideas?
Comments (9)Thanks for the good ideas. Val - yes we are planning a moveable island/table - didn't put it in the diagram as we are planning to get it after the reno but perhaps should have it there to give better picture of our plan. We are thinking a timber topped bar style table, 900 high, 1200 long and 800 wide. It'll be dual purpose - flush with benchtops for extra prep space, and a snug table for 4 (on bar chairs). Louie and Kate - thanks for the fridge tip. I was playing with this and preferred the look of the fridge inside which seemed more 'built in', but can see the point about a slight blocking of the pantry with its greater depth. One related question - if the fridge was on the outside, do you think an end panel (as in Louie's pic) is essential? With every mm literally counting, it would help save 16mm or so to not have this, but would it be an issue to have the side of the fridge exposed? Kate - re micro height, it's another good point. We chucked our current micro and were waiting to reno to replace...and have found that we hardly miss it. So we aren't even sure we need one, but thought a compromise was to have the shelving about 650 above the benchtop to allow for micro but not effect benchtop space. This would be at a similar height to ones that people sometimes have over cooktops. But agree that it would be a bit impractical for regular use of the microwave. Perhaps it's worth lowering at least 100-150mm? One final question - perhaps should be separate post. What is the thinking on minimum width next to cooktop? Of course ideally you would have 400 or 500 or more.....but in our small space, we have a reasonable space to the right of the cooktop, but only 200mm to the left. Then again have seen kitchens, especially with freestanding stoves, that have no space on one side (ie cooktop at end). In some ways this would be better for us as we could have 800 wide drawers, rather than 600 wide, then oven, then 200 wide mini drawers.....but thought it might be better to have the small 200 benchtop space on the other side of cooktop than none at all. Thoughts? Thanks again for the good ideas!...See MoreSmall kitchen/dinning layout ideas
Comments (9)If you do want to put the doors in where the oven is can you not just flip the L shape? So you have a breakfast bar running between the kitchen and dining? Might make your dining much smaller but you'll have the added eating space at the bench. Alternatively, take out the living room wall (to the hallway), close off the doorway into the kitchen and have a galley style kitchen (that's a much bigger job!). Tricky one! Ask everyone that comes to your house what they think - we did this and although we ended up working it out ourselves it was useful to go through all the wild and crazy ideas everyone had....See MoreHelp please with 2 small bathroom layouts
Comments (18)I have decided that it is a bit extravagant for me to have two bathrooms in my little house based on the small amount of times the second bathroom will be used. I am still wanting to have a laundry cupboard that has the washing machine and dryer in it (and maybe some storage or bench space for sorting????), but where the top bathroom was, I am just going to have a walk in robe off the bedroom to the right. It will have a cavity sliding door into the walk in robe. The walls go to 2700mm. To enable the shower to have a width of 900mm in the lower bathroom, the doorway is now going to be moved so that the entry to the bathroom is via a door to the far right. The toilet will now be in between the shower and vanity, so that the toilet isnt the first thing you see when you walk into the bathroom. Can anyone see any issues with the changed design, and can you suggest how to design the walk in robe and the laundry cupboard to maximise storage and function. Should I now make the the bathroom deeper and the walk in robe narrower? Should I make the laundry cupboard wider? PS. If I ever buy another house, it will be one that has already been renovated.....I am not made for design decisions. Thanks in advance for your help....See MoreInput kitchen layout
Comments (21)I think that the pantry area is definitely the place for someone who likes to leave all their appliances out. Lots of power points, gather them in one area, add a window (light and ventilatio), add an exhaust, keep one end cooler/darker for food storage, one end for appliance. Not only do appliances hog up bench space, but will look terrible left out, all over your new kitchen. An alternative is an appliance cupboard where they can remain useable and plugged in, but behind closed doors- this would entail a layout change. I like the island to be clear - great for working on and serving from, gathering around, eating at, whatever....with sink (dirty dishes!water splashes!) and cook top (safety!space!grease!steam!exhaust!) on a back/side bench out of the way....See MoreAlexia Maes
