If you want to keep the curtains that's fine. The rug is gorgeous but you need to flatten it out with piles of books so you can't see where it's been folded. Use cushions with a circle on them to match the curtains. If you hang a painting it needs to have the colours of the cushions, curtains in it. Try to find cushions with a circle pattern with at least one colour the same as your curtains. Buy a cheap canvas from the reject shop, Use the same colours of your cushions and curtains to paint circles on the painting. Draw the circles with a compass. Then paint circles on the canvas that match the curtains and the colours you have decided to use as the cushions. I think the curtains have restricted your colour use so if you don't want to replace them with something plain use the curtain and cushion colours. The rule is either 3, 5 or 7 colours. Cheap and easy . Remember to prime the canvas with white paint before you start. Another way is to cover the canvas with a wall paper that has circles the same colour as your curtains or cushions. You don't need to paper the edges just the front. Laura Ashley has some gorgeous wall papers and so does Hauzz. It's not difficult and would match the colours you have alraedy in your home....See MoreOutdated bricks and design, please help!

Homes don't need to be modernised to have character. Definitely agree with Cultivate, this is a great area to develop with a Mediterranean influence, arches look amazing. Bifold doors would make a huge difference, do away with the fussy curtains, add some comfortable wicker furniture with colourful cushions and pot plants. Remove the small solid wall and just leave the pillars to define the area. If possible remove the pillars opposite where I assume your front door is and close off the existing opening so the area is a definite room and not a passageway to make it more useful. Add a path diagonally across from the driveway to the new entrance, remove the pots from in front of the house and create a lush garden in the triangle that will be formed. Perhaps put the pots down the side of the house where a bit of greenery cool and soften the area. Buy a pressure washer - they are not expensive - and give your driveway a good clean, this will make a huge difference and buying one means you will be able to do it often to keep it looking good....See Moreinterior design advice please... for dining room.
Comments (18)Hi Mel, I agree with siriuskey. It seems a shame that the table is pushed against the wall as it a) limits the seating and b) "feels" quite awkward and cramped. From looking at your floorplan, it would seem that you have the space to pull it out, to the position shown on plan? It would mean re-positioning your lights, but I think would look a lot better. The same goes for the lounge/seating area - I would consider re-positioning the 2 armchairs (one with it's back to kitchen, the other opposite with its back to outdoor area) and adding a sofa under the window. It would mean repositioning your sideboard though. Consider a light large rug to delineate the lounge area and to also bring some light and texture into the room. I'd also consider a rug under the dining table, as you have a lot of dark timber which is pulling light out of the room...See MoreLiving room furniture design tips pleeeaaasssee

While the sofa loses some of the open plan look, you need to be functional unless you have a TV room. The bookcase will add a real warmth. If you use swivel armchairs, you can swivel to watch TV or swivel to face the sofa when just talking. We have these and they are very functional....See Moredreamer
